50 Agorot Stamps by WildernessCat
50 Agorot Stamps, a photo by WildernessCat on Flickr.

Got a whole bunch of new stamps for Postcrossing. The total sum for a card is 3.50 NIS, but the 3 NIS stamps were pretty boring. The .50 NIS ones, however left me stunned. I never knew there were so many of them!

Sent this nice free card via Postcrossing the other day, never thinking much about it. The text says "is it not good for a person to be alone?". I don't know what the interrogative form is doing there, but I suppose it has some special meaning for the ad on the other side (which I simply covered with a white sticker). After the card arrived, I became curious about the origin of this image, and fed it into Google's Image Search. What do you reckon? The man is not alone at all :)

Since I have all these programmers on my friends list, this should be appropriate here. So I work with Eclipse, and I decide I want to restart my work. All my changes - I want them gone, back to repository version. So I do right-click, "team", "revert". Okay? I press "okay". Then Eclipse detects something weird has happened. "The file has changed on disk. Do you want to load the new version?". Like ... yes? Please?

Sitting with my kid, watching the "Payphone" music video for the first time. The flick looks like a typical American action movie, I tell him. There's a bank robbery, shots are fired, there's stupid heroism, there's a beautiful girl, there's a car chase, there's police, there are helicopters. The only thing that's missing is explosions... There were explosions.

Want to read Arabic? Learn the letters.

Nothing to it.
(1st line) faraqa (difference) al-bint (girl) wal-walad (and boy) be-starbucks.
(2nd line) al-walad (the boy): Mocha.
(3rd line) al-bint (the girl): Caramel macchiato extra hot skimmed milk without thaani oxide al-carbon (CO2) with little kabritat alhadeed (ferrous sulfate).

What did I just read??

Before I move on to Latin script, I need to practice my calligraphy on some real-life situations. For example, including a Hebrew inscription on a Postcrossing card going to Russia. Terribly important.

P.S: Yes, I know I have spelling mistakes in Russian.

One of the results of being a veteran member of Postcrossing, is that you get postcards in the mail almost every day. The other week, someone's relative in town went to the UK, and sent them a couple of cards from London. Naturally, I got them all. The address was different, the name was different, but if it looked like a card, it went to my box. Over time I had no choice but to become a postman's apprentice, carrying cards to their respective addressees, getting to know many interesting people in the process. For example, I found out there's a family with the same last name like mine (I thought it was pretty unique here). And also, that there's an Estonian woman living a couple of blocks away from my house. I found out that some people lock their front gate (what for?), and some have a front door like that of a castle, with a small window that opens at face level...

What does this program print?
#include <stdio.h>

int main()
{
  int a = -10;
  unsigned int b = 2;

  printf("%d\n", a/b);

  return 0;
}

Counter-intuitive, huh?

- Hello, we are calling from the Shas party. Could you please say who you are going to vote for in the elections?
- That is confidential.
- Okay, can you say who you voted for in the previous elections?
- That is confidential as well.
- Mmmm... okay. Thank you.

Grandpa Mishas Birthday

Here's a clipping from today's Postimees. It loosely translates as "Former colleagues from Otepรครค and Tartu congratulate the long-time director of Tartu's Meat Processing Plant and Tartu Cannery on his birthday".

Happy birthday Grandpa. Wish I could come visit you more often...

I saw a wonderful scene the other day in Chicago. A shabby looking guy was standing by the 7-11, just minding his own business. A smartly dressed lady approached him, and asked if he'd like anything to eat. He said yes, and they both entered. He took a few items from the fridge, and asked the lady if that was okay. She said sure, and paid for the stuff. The lady disappears, the homeless eats.

That's quite a lot, huh? Or none at all?

Quiz question

A question on a very serious quiz I did for work today. I chose (a), and the system confirmed it was correct.

EVANGELIZE, v.
Literally, to preach the gospel to someone. In common use - to be very enthusiastic about something and tell people how good it is (e.g. The Communication team makes sure market influencers know who we are what makes us great. They do this by creating communications programs that drive awareness with key influencers and evangelize our brand in he market).

This morning, as I was driving through Kfar Yona's main street, I saw a magnificent sight. A tractor knocked off the top of a fire hydrant, and a huge fountain appeared out of nowhere (yeah, just like in Hollywood movies). The tractor operator didn't know what to do, and how to stop this sudden eruption, but I made no mistake - drove through the downpour extra slowly, and gave my car a nice free washing. Sparkling clean!
