Israeli Journey 2005.
May. 19th, 2007 07:01 amLast Thursday my friend Shai dragged me to a wine tasting dinner at the Vitkin Winery. This was the first time for me, and he said that if I did it, I better did it right, straight from the beginning. The place looked very authentic - a small private business in the middle of nowhere, big wine barrels, processing tanks, dark storage rooms, the works. I am a very little expert on wine (I barely know red from white), so this was a bit over the top for me. The man who runs the place, Doron Belogolovsky, is a real visionary in the wine making business, and he tries to accommodate the special interests of various groups of visitors. To my "misfortune", it turned out that Shai's friends knew quite a lot about wine making. Doron's explanations became technical, and I got lost in all the professional jargon. The only thing that I understood in the end of the evening, is that I like blended (complex) wines better than varietals. As for the price, it was quite reasonable - 75 NIS (less than $20) for the whole thing, including 10 different wines, home made bread, goat cheese, vegetables, and dried fruit. Driving home might be a bit of a problem afterwards. Still, warmly recommended.
