On Vox: Police Chronicles.
Jul. 17th, 2008 09:03 amThis morning, as I was dropping Yahel at the summer camp, we saw a border patrol jeep parked by the sidewalk. The border patrol people were escorting some Palestinian workers out of a building site, handcuffing them, and pushing them into the jeep. This is a pretty common sight for our neighborhood - a bunch of workers who chose to stay the night at the wrong side of the fence. Yahel got pretty scared though. I had to explain to him that those were not terrorists, and accompany him out of the car and into the summer camp.
Later on, as I was driving through the town of Bnei Zion on my way to work, another strange sight. A man in torn clothes lying face down on the main road, while a whole TV crew was standing by and taking an interview. Now, if you're not familiar with Bnei Zion, this is a pretty upscale place - definitely not a place for drifters. My guess was, that this was local TV, making a film about the dangers of traffic passing through town, in an attempt to beat the morning jams. I know they have a long issue with this, asking the authorities to build a bypass, and getting a cold shoulder, which results in an endless line of cars passing through town every weekday morning. To make a long story short, the vehicles had to drive around this circus performance, which made everyone move even slower than usual. I called the police on my mobile phone, and reported a road menace.
