Took my grandpa to the cinemateque on Monday. They are showing a bunch of Estonian films right now, so I thought - what the heck, let's give it a try. The film I chose was Sügisball (Autumn Ball), based on Mati Unt's novel. The description called for a mosaic of different characters in the modern Estonian society, so I thought it would be okay to watch. It turned out pretty nasty. The acting was superb, but the plot... Men are loners, drunkards, and sometimes aggressive psychopaths. Women are rag dolls in the hands of their men. Everything is dark and hopeless. You get out of the theater and think "thank goodness I don't live there any more". I hope people didn't get their first impressions about the country just from watching this movie. What a wasted evening.
