"My Dictionary", an illustrated Hebrew dictionary for children, dated 1979 explains the difference between the rich and the poor:

עני - ההיפך מעשיר. לאיש עני יש מעט מאד כסף ומעט מאד דברים. משפחת כהן היא משפחה ענייה. הם גרים כולם: אבא, אמא, ועשרה ילדים בדירה קטנה של שני חדרים.

עשיר - ההיפך מעני. לאיש עשיר יש הרבה מאד כסף והוא יכול לקנות הרבה דברים. לאיש עשיר יש בדרך כלל דירה גדולה ומכונית.

Poor - the opposite of rich. A poor man has very little money and very little things. The Cohens are a poor family. They all live: father, mother and ten children, in a small two-room apartment.

Rich - The opposite of poor. A rich man has lots of money and he can buy lots of things. A rich man usually has a large apartment and a car.

By these standards, we must be swimming in money...
