On Vox: By hook or by rook.
Oct. 15th, 2008 10:22 amAn anecdote about Alexander Alekhine, fourth world chess champion:
Some casual acquaintance at the spa offered Alekhine to play a quick game of
chess. Alekhine agreed, but while placing the pieces removed one of his rooks. His opponent rebelled:
- What's the deal? You don't even know me, and you give me a rook handicap?
To that Alekhine replied:
- If I couldn't have given you a rook handicap, I would have known you.
