Did our first ever Sport Orienteering run today. Well, it's difficult to call it a "run", as we were there with the kids - more of a Saturday morning walk. We started the route with one huge miss, as we had no idea how to get to our first check point. It turned out that not all the dirt roads were marked on the map. After we got that settled, we started orienteering a bit faster, but then it was 1pm, and our time ran out. The guys who ran the business started collecting their stuff, and we had to return to the car. We marked 5 out of the required 14 boxes, and didn't even bother to check in at the end point. I was pleasantly surprised that my old memories from orienteering in the army didn't come back. No learning maps by heart, no hauling of heavy equipment, no heavy boots, and no moonlit walks in the middle of the night. The weather was beautiful, we exercised ourselves and our dog, and got a breath of fresh air. Hope that next events will have us better prepared.
