Influenced by a multitude of environmentally-friendly presentations (such as this one), we finally decided to start making our own compost. Compost is a kind of natural fertillizer that is produced via controlled decay of plant matter. The final substance looks like earth, smells like earth, feels like earth, ... in fact it might be just black earth. The stuff you can put in the composter includes garden cuttings, vegetables and fruit, as well as paper shreads and other bio-degradable garbage. You have to control the moisture level inside the decomposing pile. If it's too damp, it will start to stink. If it's too dry, no compost will be produced. Every once in a while the contents of the composter must be stirred, so the whole mixture is properly aired. The compost is supposed to be ready in a few months' time. I am relatively new to this process, so any advice from experienced gardeners will be very much appreciated. Check out the photos from our garden.
