Last, but not least, I finally reached the Eilat lighthouse. This one is the most distant from my home - almost 400km driving south. We went on a family vacation by the Red Sea, and it so happened that our sleeping accommodations were a walking distance from the lighthouse. Located on a mountain slope, not far from the Egyptian border, this lighthouse is the last on my list. As far as I understand, the rest are breakwater lights, which I don't intend to photograph at this point.

Those lighthouses seem to be popping from nowhere. Here's one I discovered only a few months ago. It is located just next to the Reading Power Station - old, rusty, with its light removed. It's an ugly duckling, but it is part of Tel-Aviv's history. Must have been here since the British Mandate, and doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Take a peek.

Okay, the furlough is over and I have almost completed the Israeli lighthouse project. The milestone I reached was: completing all the Mediterranean lighthouses. The ones in Eilat are still missing, and I don't know when I'm gonna get to shoot them. So here are the last two structures: the huge modern lighthouse of Ashdod, and the quaint old-fashioned one of Jaffa.

Okay, so here are some of the images from yesterday and this morning:

One and a half days into the furlough, and here's a brief update on my lighthouse hunt. I went to Akko and Haifa yesterday, and to Mikhmoret this morning. The first one was a snatch - the lighthouse is easily accessible, stands by itself, it was early in the morning, partly cloudy - excellent for photos. Haifa was a different story. The lighthouse tower is within a military compound, and pressed between other structures. The only decent angle was with the sun standing right behind it, which gave a black silhouette against a ball of fire. Even if I return there in the evening, I'm not sure I can get a good "postcard" view of it. Now the most curious so far - Mikhmoret. The lighthouse is a tiny little rotating device on top of a concrete structure probably used as the naval school's club. Obviously, the guard at the gate didn't want to let me into the school, so I had to go around it. Down the beach, behind the fence, and there I am against the so-called lighthouse. Some students and teachers were standing near the structure, but I put on my best "I'm okay you're okay" face and kept on snapping. Nobody said anything. Off the premises, and back to the beach. Next on the list - Jaffa and Ashdod. Maybe this afternoon.
