Yesterday the missus and I decided that we needed a break, invited the grandma to babysit, and went away to a cafe. We decided to check out a new countryside place, called Beit ha-Even ("the Stone House"). After a frightening drive through dark fields and dirt roads we finally reached the place. It turned out to be a romantic little spot, with tables set up under old olive trees, complete with all the usual rural paraphernalia - buggies, grindstones, big clay pots, etc. What can I say? The draft GoldStar was great, the cheese platter was great, the soft Barry Manilow music was great, but what about the service? We waited for half an hour just to see the menu, then 15 minutes before they asked us what we wanted, and then another 30 minutes until we got it. (This included several trips to the bar, saying "well, what's up with the order, people?").

My only conclusion, is that they don't know what's good service in Israel. Either the waiters keep picking on you with "is everything allright?" every 5 minutes, or even worse - they disappear into the kitchen forever, like in the "Stoned" House. Sometimes I just want to leave without paying the bill - to see if anyone notices.
